'Hacksaw Ridge'
"Please Lord. Help me get one more. Help me get one more." - Private Desmond Doss
If you see one more movie this year, I beg you to have it be 'Hacksaw Ridge'...A TRUE STORY about Private Doss - from WWII.
I was trained by the U.S. Air Force as a Medical Service Specialist - more commonly known as a combat medic. During peacetime there is no easier job in the military than working in a hospital as a medic; it's literally a joke among most servicemen. During wartime, few troops are more revered by their peers than medics...They are the ones who get the wounded back to base; they are the ones with the emetics, antidiarrheals and ibuprofen; they are the ones with the tourniquets; they are the ones with the morphine.
I remember wanting to be sent to the Middle East during the First Gulf War - It's what I was trained for, and I was a very good medic. Instead I was bored out of my mind at Travis Air Force Base (a regional medical facility)...Looking back, I was young and foolish. I was lucky not to have to deal with the horrors of combat - during or after the battle.
'Hacksaw Ridge' was intensely personal for me. It left me wondering how I would have performed under similar circumstances...I can tell you for sure, there is no way I could have done what Doss did. Not because I would have been weak or a coward, but because what Doss did was super-human.
Again, I beg you to go watch this movie. I promise it will be worth your time. I promise you will leave in utter shock at the feat this man performed: 75 lives in 1 hellish night! A TRUE AMERICAN HERO!!!!
