Dr. Vanessa Cullins (Planned Parenthood V.P. for Medical Affairs)

"In terms of sexually transmitted diseases, expect to have HPV once you become sexually intimate. All of us get it."

- HPV = human papillomavirus = leading cause of genital warts = leading cause of cervical cancer in women and a cause of anal cancer in homosexual men.

**"All"? Really?

According to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 1/3 to 1/4 of American women have HPV. Heterosexual men have it much less regularly than women. Homosexual men have higher rates due to anal sex, but not as high as women...By these estimates, 2/3 to 3/4 of American women don't have HPV, and neither do most men.

"The best way to protect yourself from HPV is to not have sex or to only have sex with one uninfected partner who also only has sex with you (i.e., a mutually monogamous relationship)." - eMedTv

"All"? Hardly; not even close to "All"...Anyone who is sexually active is at risk of catching any of the various STD's, but those who are at least a little selective about their sexual partners and use common sense (in other words, those who aren't promiscuous) have a much lower risk of becoming STD statistics. Those who skank around (male or female) or have gay sex have a much higher risk of joining the "All" crowd.

In other words: Not "All" who have STD's are skanks or homosexuals, but "All" who are skanks or homosexuals run a much higher risk of having STD's.**

You are not all that bright based on a number of comments. 'All' may be an exaggeration, but not by much. The fact that a certain percentage of persons currentlyhave HPV is not related to the rates of infection over the course of a lifetime. That is, if I currently do not have HPV, that is not to say I haven't had it in the past or won't get it in the future should I be sexually active. In many cases, people will not evidence any symptoms.

I didn't make the "all" comment, Dr. Cullins did.

And no matter how you spin it, the CDC data doesn't prove her comment out.

I work in the health industry, and am a big proponent of the HPV vaccine, but it's ridiculous for anyone in a possition of authority to come out with a statement like the one Cullins made.

By the way, I've never had an STD of any kind in my life....Maybe I'm a freak though.

I went back and re-read my comment, Drewsifer, and am not sure what part of it you think isn't true.

I didn't make any outrageous comment or claims...Especially the last paragraph.

as I said, 'all' is indubitably an overstatment. You are using her general hyperbole to make a dubious point that Cullen was offbase. No reasonable person would come to the conclusion that she ment a literal 100% figure. At any rate, htr hyperbole is apt. I'll just reference one site that mentions 80% as a likely figure over the course of a lifetime: http://www.ashastd.org/hpv/hpv_learn_patfactsheet.cfm .

Admittedly, this is a site for ASHA, but the studies are out there.

The point is that the only jackassery going on here involves you. Beyond an almost childlike fixation of specificity/hyperbole, your willful or ignorant inability to distinguish between lifetime infection rates and current infection rates surely couldn't give a reader must confidence in the solvency of your mind.

In fact, this web site is based on weak out of context quotes followed by some unsubstantiated quip that the speaking is yet another Wacky Liberal. At least get quotes that are substantive.

Spellin's spellin.....No problem with that Drew.

Not sure how you got here, but keep coming by.

I accept all comments, and actually read them...May not agree, but do read them.

All of the statements I've ever listed here are from their mouths...If they are exagerated or hyperbolic it is because the person who said them is so.

You should also notice, my #1 quote of the year last year was from Bush...Who everyone likes taking literally when he steps on himself.

Drew, you still haven't explained how my comment was WRONG. You may not like it that I've argued the ALL point, but can you say my overall comment is wrong?

I have a comment about Drewsifer's comment. IT shows a bit of ignorance about HPV itself. HPV is Virus (the V part). There is no difference between current infection and lifetime infection with HPV. Once you have it, you will ALWAYS have it. There is no cure for a virus. You body may beat it back for a while, but it is still there and will recur at times when your immune system is low. If you have EVER had it, you still currently have it. This is why the infections rates are so great. I understand your point Pero.....she is consigning everyone to the same moral (immoral) heap like it is inevitable. I also have never contracted an STI because I have had one sexual partner (whom I am married to, but I bet Dr Cullins would look down on that), who also has been monogamous. She is from the same group screaming that abstinence education doesn't work....while showing very little unbiased evidence to support their suppositions. They want to give everyone condoms and tell kids to go ahead and do it because 'everyone does it' (what I call the great lie). They rarely talk about failure rates for condoms either (2-8% on average) or the associated risks. Her comment is totally bogus and irresponsible. EVERYONE doesn't get it....IF you are smart about your sex life and exercise a little self control and morality (another dirty word to the left). But THAT is not what the left wants either.

Fine fine... It is a virus... but it goes in to remission where it is not evidenced at all.
