"In this case, quite simply, the parties failed to perform to statutory requirement of the Kansas Parentage Act in not enlisting a licensed physician at some point in the artificial insemination process, and the parties' self-designation (Michael) Marotta as a sperm donor is insufficient to relieve Marotta of parental right and responsibility to the child."
- Michael Marotta is a nice guy who answered two lesbian's CraigsList request for a sperm donor. He did so at no charge, with no future expectations of ever seeing the child, and he did it to help two lesbians who were desperate to have a child.
This poor guy did nothing wrong; other than trusting that his niceness wouldn't ever be a problem, that is. Talk about nice guys finishing last!
Even more incredible, it's not even the women who are coming after Michael for child support; it is the state.
The women have since separated, and the birth mom (one of the lesbians) was applying for welfare. The state asked about her child, and who was the father. She listed the sperm-donor, and now the state says he should pay to care for the child instead of the state...So, this nice guy is going to have to pay child support, for a child he is nothing but a sperm donor for, for the rest of the child's years as a minor!
Common sense would dictate the two women are the responsible parties, and the second woman should be considered the 'other parent.' Common sense would dictate that Michael Marotta is nothing but an innocent bystander. Common sense would dictate a lot of things...But when it comes to our court system, common sense is often uncommon.

Here's hoping some decent pro-lesbian group steps up to cover the costs for this nice guy...I wouldn't hold my breath on that one, however.
